When the world's premier gravel race takes place each year just down the road it can be easy to lose the perspective of just how significant the Unbound Gravel events are in the culture of gravel racing and cycling in general. It was easy to think, "Oh that little event down in Emporia? The former "Dirty Kanza" has a lottery system now? What the hell...I'll give it a shot."
So I did.
And I got lucky: I was picked in the lottery for the Unbound Gravel 200, taking place on May 31, 2025.
Then comes the realization that Unbound has grown from a scrappy little local event to become the ultimate gravel race not just in Kansas, not just in the US, but in the entire world.
Just one problem: I've been training for a completely different trekking expedition (not biking at all) and I don't own a gravel bike.
So we've got no food, we've got no jobs and our pets' heads are falling off! Oh wait. Wrong quote. How about: We've got no legs, we've got no bike, and this is the biggest gravel event on the planet!
Now what?
